2023 Camp Coaches

Ethan Tong (Head Coach)
Ethan qualified to Nationals in Moot Court both years he competed, earning an 8th place Oral Advocate award at the 2019 National Championship. He and his partner were the top seed at the 2019 Dallas National Mixer, at which he won a 2nd place Oral Advocate award. He and his partner also placed 2nd at the Illinois National Mixer that same year.

In the last two years, Ethan has qualified 7 of the 9 Moot Court teams he coached to the National Championship, with his teams placing 7th, 5th, and 2nd. Three of his private students have won 1st place Oral Advocate awards throughout the year, and 5 of them won top 6 Oral Advocate awards at Nationals. Additionally, he co-authored NCFCA's 2023-2024 Moot Court packet.

Ethan graduated from Hillsdale College, where he garnered outstanding attorney and outstanding witness awards in Mock Trial. Currently, he is pursuing a Master's of Divinity at Truett Theological Seminary.
Caleb Brown
Caleb competed in the NCFCA for five years in Team Policy, Moot Court, and 6 speech events. He competed in Moot Court for three years, and was nationally ranked each time. In 2022, he and his partner won the third Moot Court National Qualifier. This past season, his team placed in the top 5 in every tournament he competed in, including 3rd at the Moot Court National Championship. Caleb also won 2 first-place Oral Advocate awards, and won third place Oral Advocate at the National Championship.

In the immediate future, he plans to attend Liberty University and work as a 911 Dispatcher.
Patrick McDonald
Patrick competed in the NCFCA for five years. He and his partner qualified to nationals in Moot Court both years they competed. His senior year, he and his partner won the second Moot Court Qualifier, where he won 3rd place Oral Advocate. They went on to win the 2022 National Championship in Moot Court, and Patrick garnered a 5th place Oral Advocate. Patrick also won 3 other events at the National championship––Extemporaneous, Persuasive, and After Dinner Speaking.

Patrick is a sophomore at Hillsdale College, studying history and politics. He was the first freshman in Hillsdale College history to be awarded All-Regional and All-National outstanding attorney awards in Mock Trial.

Past Coaches

Eden Mackie (2020 Coach)
Eden qualified to Nationals in Moot Court during her sole year of competition in the style after winning the 2019 Dallas National Mixer with her partner. At the 2019 National Championship, she earned a winning record and placed 6th in Moot Court.

During her gap year after graduating high school, she coached several Moot Court teams, including the 2020 Big Sandy National Mixer Moot Court champions. This fall, she will be attending Patrick Henry College to study economics and business analytics. Eden is eager to continue teaching the next generation of advocates this summer!
Jack Singer (2020 Coach)
Jack competed in NCFCA for six years, competing in Moot Court his senior year of High School. He took 2nd oral advocate at the 2019 Rome Mixer, 3rd oral advocate at the 2019 Northfield Mixer, and 3rd oral advocate at the 2019 NCFCA National Championship. Jack and his partner Joshua DeVlieger completed their season by ranking seventh in the nation at the National Championship.

Jack is a sophomore at Patrick Henry College, where he is a double major in American Politics and Policy and Strategic Intelligence. Outside debate, he spends his time planning trips around the world and buying ridiculously expensive shoes. Jack greatly enjoys sharing his love for Moot Court with others and cannot wait to help your students achieve and excel beyond their goals in competition!
Hope Turner (2020 Coach)
Hope Turner has been competing in moot court for the past four years - three years of NCFCA high school moot court and one year of collegiate moot court. She achieved numerous oral advocate awards in NCFCA, and won the National Championship in 2019 along with her partner, Hope Rawlson.

As a freshman in college, she and her partner, Isaac Bock, won the intramural competition at Patrick Henry College, were semi finalists at the regional level and placed in the top 32 at the AMCA National Championship. Hope is so excited to work with you on the activity that she loves!
Josh DeVlieger (2020 Coach)
Josh competed in speech and debate for five years. He qualified to nationals in Moot Court for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He placed third at the NC National Open two years in a row and placed 7th at the 2019 National Championship. He later won the 2020 Anderson National Mixer and has earned numerous top 5 oral advocate awards.

Josh is an incoming freshman at Hillsdale College where he plans to major in politics with a minor in economics. Moot Court was his all-time favorite forensic event and his only regret is that he didn’t get to do it longer!
